Ocean Zen Brings Asian Fusion to Springfield

I don’t intend all my restaurant reviews to be of the Asian-fusion variety, but Chris and I had an anonymous gift card (evidence suggests it was from Chris’s bosses) to Ocean Zen, a 2006 Best of 417 winner. We also wanted to celebrate the completion of my thesis’s first working draft, so I made reservations for the hubby and I on Friday night.

We were greeted on the other side of the enormous wooden doors by friendly hosts. Our table wasn’t quite ready, so we waited in the foyer. This gave us time to take in the decor of the dining room. Another review I read referred to the interior design as having an “under the sea” theme—and not of the Little Mermaid persuasion. I really didn’t catch that theme until I read that review; the use of wood, metal, fire, and water made me think of zen-like feng shui.

But enough about the decor. I mean, as cool as it was, that’s not why we were there. The hosts seated us within ten minutes of arriving, and we had a seat right next to the kitchen in a half booth-half bar top table. Now, if we had planned a romantic dinner, this was not the ideal table; however, I happen to like being in the action, and we could see the kitchen, the bar, and the dining room from our vantage point.

Our server greeted us right away, but we had to remind him a second time to bring Chris’s iced tea. Our Blue Crab and Cream Cheese Stuffed Crispy Wontons were promptly brought to our table. These rich pockets of heaven are arguably the best in town and could easily be mistaken for a dessert rather than an appetizer.

Chris ordered the Mongolian Barbeque Glazed Grilled 12 oz. Ribeye with Szechwan-style Asparagus, Bacon Cheddar Smashed Potatoes, and Peppercorn cognac Cream Sauce. Chris says, “The ribeye was good but was a little disappointing. I expected it to be a little better, but part of that was my fault; I ordered it medium rare, but it was a little too rare for me. The glaze was fantastic and had a sweet, subtle kick to it. The steak was tender—not tough. It was a good piece of meat, but it wasn’t the most flavorful steak. The asparagus was quite possibly the best I’ve had—it wasn’t stringy or limp or soggy but was crisp, fresh, and flavorful. The smashed potatoes were also great. They had a good texture and were infused with real pieces of bacon that added a rich flavor, which complemented the steak. All together, it was a great dish.”

I ordered the Sesame Nori Crusted Seared Rare Ahi Tuna with Lobster Mousse Stuffed Shrimp, Wild Mushroom Risotto Cake, and Balsamic Lobster Glaze. The tuna was excellent at first bite—hot and seared on the outside and warm and rare on the inside with a subtle tuna flavor. The risotto cake was the best risotto I’ve ever tried; it’s flavor was rich with flavor yet light in texture. The shrimp was rich with the lobster mousse and was wonderful. Actually, the flavors of the risotto and the shrimp outshined the tuna. And perhaps I’m a slow eater, but by the time I reached the last of the tuna and risotto, they had lost their warmth and weren’t very yummy to eat anymore.

This was our second visit to Ocean Zen since its move to the Battlefield location, and so far the service and food has been consistent. Friday night, from our booth near the kitchen, we witnessed the teamwork of the staff, which was fun to watch. We’re excited to visit Ocean Zen again and see how its service and food continue to improve, and we can’t wait to pick out a favorite OZ dish.

Fastest Tetris Player Ever

One more mindless video as a reward for all my hard work this week. GeekSugar shared this today, and I could not stop watching. I can only get to maybe level 7 in Tetris, so I about peed my pants watching this. And watch this baby to the end: he seems fast at the beginning of the video but that’s nothing compared to the action at the end!

Crack Spiders

Thanks to Justin and Barron who showed me this video last weekend. Even if you don’t like spiders, stick with it to the end.

P.S. This video has some foul language and drug references, so tuck the kids to bed before watching.

Thesis Writing Is Hard Work!

I apologize for my absence this week, but I’ve been actually working on my thesis. Yes, I came in to work on Monday morning, looked at the calendar, and realized that I had 12 days to finish my working first draft and get it to my readers. That is, I promised them the draft by the end of September, and if I intend to graduate this semester, I pretty much have to have the working first draft finished by then.

And I’m getting mighty close! This week, with my husband in tow, I have worked night after night. Monday, we went to Churchill’s for coffee and free WiFi; I finished my literature review. Tuesday, we went to San Francisco Oven for pizza and free WiFi; I wrote the research/methods chapter for the first of three mini studies. Last night, Wednesday, we went to Churchill’s again for coffee; I wrote the research/methods chapter for the second of the three mini studies. Tonight, we’re going to Panera for dinner; I plan to write the research/methods chapter for the third of the three mini studies.

Then, we’re going to see Helvetica at the Moxie with the Thursday Movie Fun Club. Tomorrow, I leave for the Gathering of Girlfriends and a much-needed weekend of relaxation and Jesus. I’ll have all next week to write the discussion/conclusions section and the introduction. I so have this baby in the bag!

10.6-Miler Chafing Report

Linden and I ran our 10.6-miler this morning in 2:10:56, a 12:15ish pace. Not too shabby for either of us, and our outing totally redeemed last week’s suckathon of 9.3 miles at a 13:00+ pace.

Roughly 14 hours have passed since we finished our run, and I’m blogging as I ice my left knee and right shin. Already I’m having problems with stairs and have started going down them sideways. Is this how it’s going to be from now on? Do I just start to accept that on Sundays I’m going to be worthless and sore and grumpy and not much fun to be around?

I should’ve taken an ice bath this morning, but our drains in our bathtubs don’t seal, so I had to settle for a cold shower, but I’m weak so it turned into a hot shower quickly. We’ll get the drains sorted out soon—hopefully before my half marathon—so I can start self-torture that is the ice bath.

The chafing this week is actually the least of my worries—mostly some chafing in the sports bra area, but nothing a little Neosporin couldn’t relieve.

I took in fruit punch Sport Beans during the run, and they did an excellent job sustaining me throughout the run. I like them better than traditional gels because I can eat them just a few at a time, and they’re not messy—a beef I have with other gels.

Right after the run, I carbed up with a Snickers Marathon energy bar. Gotta say that it’s the best tasting energy/power/protein bar I’ve ever had, and it kept me going through the late church service and lunch. A great choice for refueling after a longer run.

I also refueled with a three-hour nap this afternoon. For naps like these, I should just slip into bed rather than sleeping on the couch, but I slept so hard this afternoon it didn’t matter. And with that, I’m done icing and I’m going to bed. It’s 11:02. So much for lights out at 11—but I swear I’m getting better!

The Percolating is Through—SarahJoAustin.com is Live!

Exciting news! You can now go straight to A Fool of Myself at www.sarahjoaustin.com. I bought the domain name last January for a class, and since I still own the darn thing, I might as well use it. You still find me at afoolofmyself.blogspot.com, if that’s easier for you to remember, but if you know my name, you can find me online. How sweet is that?

Why I’m Mad at the Germans

Chris and I went to the Moxie again tonight on an impromptu date. Our week has been so incredibly stressful, and we’ve hardly seen one another, so a date was overdue. We watched “My Best Friend,” a French comedy about an art dealer who realizes he has no friends, bets his business partner that he can produce his best friend in exchange for a Grecian vase, and learns how to be a friend from a taxi driver. An excellent film. I highly recommend it!

On the way home, Chris and I started joking about the “three S’s” of being a friend: sociable, smiling, and sincere. And then we started talking about friends, specifically Linden, and how she’ll be hard to replace when she moves to Germany in 14 days. You see, I’m fiercely loyal to my friends, but making friends doesn’t come easy for me. It takes me about six months of keeping an eye on people “I should get to know” before I allow myself to open up and let the friendship really blossom.

With Linden, we hit it off pretty quickly. She registered Chris and I for our wedding at Bed Bath & Beyond, we shared an office in the English Department, we started running together, we had fun talks on our runs (I knew she was a keeper when she didn’t judge me for my zit-popping point system), and we had a web development class together (I didn’t realize until then just how nerdy we were—and it compounded when we were together).

I’m really sad that she’s leaving. By the time Chris and I got home tonight, I was crying because I knew that she’d be impossible to replace. It’s not just about the running, though I’m a little afraid I won’t finish my training with as much gusto as I would with her running with me. I’m afraid I won’t find another running buddy that’s half as great as she is.

But we’re friends off the trail, too. Who else loves Google as much as I do? Who else let’s me ramble on about this blog and my ideas for it as much as she does? Who else gets half as excited about Harry Potter-themed movie nights as me? Who else can appreciate the idiosyncrasies of my cat as she does?

Linden sent me this Marcel Proust quote a while back: “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy: They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” I am so grateful for Linden and her never-ending friendship. She has truly made my soul bloom over the last two years, and I’ll never forget that. Even though I have to give her up State-side, I know that she will bless everyone she meets in Germany, and I trust that she’ll garden many souls there.

P.S. I feel like that last paragraph was sweet and profound, so I’ll ruin it with this: Stupid Germans! You ruin everything!

P.S.2. Linden, I don’t think Rob is stupid and I don’t know that he’s ever ruined anything.

And You Call Yourself a Runner?!

The past four days have closely resembled a really bad roller coaster—you know, the ones with grimy seats and questionable seat belts at shady amusement parks. I trust you know what I’m talking about, so I’m going to continue…

Saturday I ran the Awesome Running Challenge 5K. Okay, so it was actually “The Run for the Summit,” but Linden and I adopted it as a race challenge for our friends and invited all of them to run with us. It was raining, so Linden and I were the only ones in our group to come, but I was really proud of my race; I actually felt like I was racing, not just running. Saturday got a smiley face.

Sunday, Linden and I ran our long run as usual. It was supposed to be 8.5 miles but ended up being 9.3 miles. I knew it was going to be rough when we stopped to walk about 20 minutes in; I was exhausted from Saturday—not only had I ran the 5K but I’d also spent the entire afternoon walking the hills and eating the junk food at Silver Dollar City. We walked for most of the long run’s second half, clocking a disappointing 13:00+ pace. Two frowny faces.

Today, Linden and I ran with our friend David, and I felt fantastic, running just over an 11:00 pace. Smiley face.

In between these runs, is where I think the problem lies. I call myself a runner, but I don’t act like it when I’m not running. I eat fried, sugary, and/or processed foods pretty often, especially on the weekends. And I’m not great at getting in all the sleep I need; I’m a night owl, yet I crawl out of bed before 6:30 most mornings (and I know something’s wrong with me when I “sleep in” until only 9:30–used to be sleeping in meant 12:30 or 1).

So tonight I’m ready to make a little resolution to myself. I’m going to start keeping a food diary, making sure that I get carbs and protein in every mini meal every 2–3 hours. I’m also resolving to be in bed lights out at 11:00 every night (yes, that’s still pretty late, but this is about baby steps). I’ll keep you posted…It’s 9:50, and I have to make my lunch, pack my gym bag, and do some reading before 11.

"Christians" Preaching a God of Hate? Hmm…

I need to keep this post short tonight because I have a crapload to do before I go to bed, but some like-minded friends of ours told us about this video on YouTube. Dubbed “The Most Hated Family in America,” they picket soldier’s funerals and condemn pretty much everyone; furthermore, they preach that God hates both America and you.

I watched the first two (there are seven or eight), and I’m sharing the first with you. I am actually sad to share this because I don’t want to acknowledge that people who call themselves Christians actually behave like this. I could give you an outline of verses (in context) that argue where they are wrong, but I hope any real Christ-follower can see through their lies without a dissertation from me.

Let’s just leave it at this: As real Christ-followers, we must be extra deliberate to LOVE people and then speak truth into their lives when the time is right.

P.S. At a family reunion this summer, I learned that one of my dad’s cousins and her husband are a part of veterans biker group. Whenever there’s a soldier’s funeral in the Kansas City area, they get on their hogs and “guard” the funeral. I’m guessing that they’re guarding some of the same funerals these people are picketing.

Sarah Kicks Some at the Summit 5K

This morning, I was a hardcore runner and ran the Summit 5K IN THE RAIN! I finished in 31:50 and placed second in my age category. I felt so good—who else gets up on a rainy Saturday morning to run a race? Nothing but a real runner!

Mom and Dad came down from Clinton to watch. We went to Steak ‘N Shake for breakfast and went to Silver Dollar City this afternoon. After such a full day, here’s hoping I survive the 8 1/2 mile training run tomorrow!
