Daddy Raised Me Right

The best way to start any morning is with a drivable car. This morning did not start with such a car. My rear driver-side tire was flat as a pancake. Thankfully I noticed the problem before I got out of my subdivision and was able to return to my dry garage to make the switch. And thankfully I’ve got a dad who raised me to change my own tires.

It took me about 40 minutes to change the tire; afterall, I’m not on a Nascar pit crew and I haven’t changed a tire since 2002. But I did it. And I had so much grease on my hands after the fact I had to use Goop to get cleaned up. But my designer jeans were grease-free.

Long story short, I apparently don’t take great care of my tires. The inside sidewall of this tire had some damage that required a tire replacement. And the other tire we replaced had some dangerous thin spots. The two that are left will need replacing by spring. But now that I think if it, we put these tires on my car in 2005, so it’s about time.

And so the question remains today: Am I brilliantly creative or a gigantic idiot? I think the answer is pretty clear, but you can vote below.

The Sharpie/Google Training Calendar

The Sharpie/Google Training Calendar

The Sharpie/Google Training Calendar

Today’s “A Fool of Myself” moment is brought to you by Sharpie. And Google. I printed off blank Google calendars of October, November, and December and proceeded to write, in purple Sharpie, my training plan for the next three months. Then, I photocopied those calendars and they will be hung, with love, on my refrigerator, bathroom mirror, and office whiteboard. No, the plan will not be added to my online calendar. I’m sure the folks at Google are rolling their eyes at me for abusing their technology with purple Sharpie.

All right. Time to vote. Am I brilliantly creative or a gigantic idiot?

P.S. Still not a fan of blogging from the iPhone, but it sure is useful for posting pictures to my blog!

Random Thoughts | August 31, 2009

A few random thoughts from today that have not made it to Twitter:

  1. I think Ravi has finally forgiven me for bringing Mowgli home. Or he’s figured out there’s a connection from snuggling with me and receiving permission to hang out with me in the bathroom while I get ready in the mornings. There’s been a lot of hanging with me this week.
  2. I am still looking for an iPhone armband. After lunch yesterday, Hubs and I went to Best Buy, the mall, and MC Sports trying to find something suitable, but anything that was in stock was a piece of crap. Still searching, so if you have a recommendation, please let me know.
  3. As a friend from high school articulated to me on Facebook, I am homesick for my niece LJ. I am all about that kid! And I picked out her Christmas present yesterday. (Hopefully, I can restrain myself that long.)
  4. And yet again, I have waited too long to order contacts and I will be suffering with uber-dry lenses for the next week. Sticky sticky.
  5. Only ten days until Linden returns to the States! I don’t think I’ll get to see her right away because she and Rob are going to hang with her family for a time, but I’ll just be glad that she’s on the correct side of the Atlantic again.

Pictures of LJ soon. Plus a movie review of Adam. Plus a review of a new walking/running trail in Ozark.

Why I’m Taking a Blogging Break

Dropping you all an update today to let you know that I am taking a blogging break starting tomorrow and continuing through July. I will be back around the first of August. I have a million factors that have brought me to this crossroads, and no, none of them have anything to do with other bloggers in my local congregation quitting blogging. Here’s what’s going on:

  1. The 30-Day Challenge. My husband has recently become obsessed with Morgan Spurlock and his 30 Days television show, and he has been issuing himself 30-day challenges. Today he wraps up his challenge to go without soda and without biting his nails for 30 days. He’s teaching himself discipline in all areas of his life 30 days at a time. The challenge that begins tomorrow and that has also been issued to me is to spend 30 days engrossed in God’s Word with the goal of reading the Bible in its entirety in 30 days. This equates to about 40 chapters of Bible reading every day. I, too, could use some additional spiritual discipline in my life, and I am going to spend my days reading the Bible and meeting my self-assigned quota of journal pages every day. Needless to say, this challenge requires me to sacrifice much of what I enjoy doing in my free time, and writing for A Fool of Myself is a logical time-spender to sacrifice during this time.
  2. The New Business. Chris and I have started freelancing again, and this time we are serious about making this venture stick for the long term. So we’re pursuing print design, web design, and blogging clients, and as money comes in, we’re legalizing the business one federal or state form at a time. Much of our evenings are spent working on our own collateral or on client projects, so blogging naturally takes a bit of a back burner. It’s simple math really: I can make money working on the business or not make money blogging.
  3. The Training. I haven’t talked much about it recently, but I’ve started running again with the hope of doing a longer race in November. Training for this race starts next week. I’m hesitant to use the word marathon because I’ve said I’m training for a marathon a million times before on this blog, and I’ve not yet had the discipline to stick it out. So I’m saying that I’m running to prepare for a longer race this fall. After July is over and I’ve stuck with the training plan for a month, I’ll have a better idea of whether I want to do a full or half marathon.
  4. The Miscellany. In addition to all the above activities, I am throwing a baby shower next month and helping with a wedding shower. I have at least one crochet project/gift to finish, possibly another small one. At work, I’m working to unroll an online membership database that will allow LPC’s people to login, update their information, register for events, check their giving records, etc., and all that requires a lot of thinking. And I have a family reunion. And there’s a ton of yard work we need to do that has to be done during the hottest six weeks of the year.

All this to say that I think it’s wise for me to sacrifice some television and blogging and a bit of Twitter this month to focus on a few other things that are of great importance to me and my family. I’ll still be maintaining SGFblogs.com and planning a July meetup, and I’ll still be on my Twitter account and Facebook because part of my work depends upon those social outlets, but I’ll just not be hanging out here. For that reason, comments will be closed come tomorrow, too. I’m also declaring Google Reader bankruptcy and will not be checking RSS feeds, which means no Twittering on bloggers_guide or tweeples_guide and very few comments on your all’s blogs.

Chris and I could definitely use your prayers during the next several weeks. Thanks for being faithful readers and thanks for understanding! Talk to you in August!

Five-Minute Update: May is Insane; June isn’t Looking Better

So I’m running behind this afternoon, missed the 4:30 mail pick-up, and it’s looking like I’ll be late for dinner, so I thought I’d shoot you all a quick update.* Weekend was crazy. Friday night Chris and I wrapped up our spare bedroom project by painting trim, assembling the bed, and attempting to hang sword cases. Yes, sword cases. They came down shortly after they were hung because they were too heavy. Awesome surprise: door knobs are spray-paintable! No more ugly brass door knobs! They now are Rustoleum Hammered Dark Bronze.

Saturday. Wheel of Fortune auditions in Branson with old friend Jenn. Lunch at Danna’s BBQ. Dinner at Ruby Tuesday. Surprisingly, Nixa traffic was more crazy than Branson’s. That’s saying something.

Sunday. Awesome group of kiddo’s in KidLife. Going to miss them. I’ve stepped down from teaching next year. It’s the right choice even though I’m just getting into the groove of teaching 1st- and 2nd-graders.

Monday. Social Media Think Tank meeting in Springfield. Love meeting other social media junkies. Seriously, the way we all introduced ourselves (Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m addicted to Twitter.), you’d think we were at a social media anonymous group. Can’t wait to see what comes of this group. Tonight: dinner with hubby’s extended fam. Lots of canasta and incredible food.

Tuesday. Normal day. Springfield blogger’s meeting. Several have RSVPed. I love meeting new bloggers.

Wednesday. Hair cut. Bangs are crazy thick right now.

Thursday. Absolutely nothing, unless Other Sarah decides to go running after work.

Friday. Bro’s graduation. Praise Jesus!

Saturday. Nephew’s graduation. Can’t wait to give him his ninja crobot.

Sunday. Busy night of meetings at LifePoint.

I could continue, but you get the picture. May is crazy. And June is shaping up to be as well. Thankfully, I’ve had the foresight to take off the entire week of Memorial Day. Yes!

*Forgive my lack of linking. I’m in a hurry.

Top 10 Things I’m Thankful For Today

Feeling especially thankful today…

  1. Baby cows in the spring.
  2. The hope of a more pedestrian-friendly Ozark. (Construction crews are putting in sidewalks today.)
  3. Friends who believe I can do 45 thrusters and 45 (jumping) pull-ups in less than 20 minutes. (Thanks, Sarah!)
  4. Strangers who also believe #3.
  5. My growing affinity/tolerance for coffee with less sugar and less creamer.
  6. Just-ripe bananas.
  7. Wash-and-wear hair.
  8. Power naps with Mowgli before I leave for work
  9. Talking with my hubby, if only for a few minutes, before he leaves for work.
  10. Not throwing up or passing out after my first Crossfit workout.

Super-Size My Moleskine, Please

moleskinefolio1

It’s no secret that I am a lover of the Moleskine. I have five in use right now + another that needs to be finished off (it’s not currently in use) + two that are waiting patiently in the wings. I currently use two sizes: the pocket size for on-the-go notetaking (i.e. food diary, workout log, idea book, and sermon notes (I have a pocket-sized Bible)) and the large size for my bedside journal. Ever since I was introduced to my favorite notebook, I’ve longed for a bigger, meatier Moleskine that would put spiral notebooks in their place. (In all actuality, I haven’t owned a spiral notebook since HS. I write solely on gridded paper, so I buy gridded pads.)

My dream has come true! Moleskine is introducing The Folio Collection this spring. According to Core77, “The books will be available in 5 styles:

  • Ruled book : 176 pages, available in the A4 format
  • Plain book : 176 pages, available in the A4 and A3 formats
  • Portfolio : an accordion-style tool featuring big pockets in cardboard and cloth, available in A4 and A3 formats
  • Sketchbook : 96 large pages in high quality heavy paper, available in A4 and A3 formats
  • Watercolour Album : 60 pages, heavy paper, 200 gsm, cold pressed, available in the A4 and A3 format”

A little disappointed that the gridded book isn’t on their list, but I’m hoping they’ll add it soon. Definitely going to pick up a portfolio to manage all those loose papers I acquire and need to move back and forth from home to work. For the record, when I was doing my thesis research, I told Chris that I wanted Moleskine to make one of these. I think I’m more excited about super-sized Moleskine’s than I am about Harry Potter this summer!

Sarah Needs…Sarah Wants

A fun post today because last night was a bit depressing. And it’s a game (yes, imported from Facebook, but still fun.) Here we go. Google your first name + needs. Share the top ten results. Here are mine:

  1. Sarah needs a cold shower.
  2. Sarah needs to get her life back.
  3. Sarah needs a date, maybe some fun, and if it works out a bit of schtupping.
  4. Sarah needs your manly vote.
  5. Sarah needs more love lyrics.
  6. Sarah needs to make a cake and some cookies.
  7. Sarah needs to hand him one of those weapons that went off without warning.
  8. Sarah Needs is on Facebook.
  9. Sarah needs to feel peaceful, and also needs to feel equal to (or better than) everyone else.
  10. Sarah needs a Wii.

Ironically, most of these are somewhat true. Gotta love Google. I also googled “Sarah wants,” and here are those results:

  1. Sarah wants to be president.
  2. Sarah wants us to know that she’ll help expand that hole.
  3. Sarah wants recognition as a leader in her sport.
  4. Sarah wants to contact you.
  5. Sarah wants to know about fare incentives to discourage people from arriving by car.
  6. Sarah Wants is on Facebook.
  7. Sarah wants to pour you a drink.
  8. Sarah wants more Dino talk.
  9. Sarah wants to know more about disabled veterans.
  10. Sarah wants to do to America what she did to Alaska.

Big surprise. A lot of those reference Sarah Palin.

Finally, A Valentine’s Day We Can Be Proud Of

Chris and I have a long-standing poor record on Valentine’s Day. This was our fifth V Day together, and finally we have a good one in the bag:

  • No one was sick
  • No one was grouchy
  • We had a good table at the restaurant for our date
  • Chris was my date, and not Betsy (sorry, girl)
  • I got a nap
  • There was chocolate, steak, and spinach dip
  • There was also sushi
  • My man took me to watch Titanic
  • We got coffee
  • We didn’t buy each other gifts (it’s a good thing, I swear)

We were really starting to wonder if we were cursed. I mean, even before Chris I didn’t have too many V Day’s on record. (When I was 15, my ten-year-old cat Vanilla died. It sucked.) Finally, we have one that is worth remembering! Hope yours were great, too!
