Crystal Skulls, Corneal Abrasions, and Whole Lotta Jack Squat: How We Spent Our Memorial Day Weekend

Well, we had quite the Memorial Day weekend. Would you like to read all the gory details?

Friday
The Awesome Movie Fun Club had a field trip scheduled to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls Friday night, so I spent the entire day in town running errands in my fun little Chevy Cobalt and working on miscellaneous tasks at Panera. Chris picked up tickets for our crew on his lunch break, and the theater peeps told us to be in line for the 7:05 movie by 6ish. Since we were supposed to meet for dinner at 5:30, we canceled official dinner plans and told everyone to get dinner on their own. I liked the movie, but Chris didn’t. You may or may not get an official review later this week.

Blazer Got a Boo-Boo: How Sarah Wrecked Her Car

Today’s story starts with hummus. Last Friday, I went to a party where hummus was served, and it gave me a hankering for my own, so I purchased some yummy tomato basil hummus on Tuesday during my weekly run to the grocery store.

On Wednesday morning, I decided that the lunch I packed for the day was insufficient and that the hummus sitting in my refrigerator would make a much better lunch, so I drove home—a ten-minute drive—and retrieved my tortilla chips and hummus. And I drove back to work.

The highway between Nixa where I live and Ozark where I work is only two lanes wide, and when get into Ozark, the speed limit lowers from 55 mph to 45 mph. Just after the 45 mph sign, there’s an intersection with a flashing yellow light.

This was the scene of my accident.

Sarah vs. Monday

Inspired by last week’s Katy vs. Wednesday . Monday was a battle of the wills.

* Round 1 (7:05 AM). Sarah wakes up early on her own. Decides to take a shower with her free time. Hair straightens to perfection. Sarah wins.
Sarah-1; Monday-0
* Round 2 (8:10 AM). Sarah is out the door five minutes ahead of schedule (advantage Sarah) but loses time to pansy drivers who won’t turn left on a solid green light (advantage Monday). Sits through two stoplight cycles.

Impromptu Date Yields Impromptu Reviews of Downtown Springfield’s Library Branch and Coffee Ethic

Chris and I had a date last night! I can’t remember the last time we had a real, live date on the spur of the moment. Before starting Financial Peace , we went out every week, but since we’ve tightened our purse strings, the dates have been fewer and farther between.

But I had been in a funk all week—I still don’t its source—so we decided to go downtown. No, not downtown Nixa. Downtown Springfield !

Hooray! Jesus Gives Sarah Strength!

Today is a praise-Jesus day, and this week is a praise-Jesus week! Do you ever look at your to-do list and wonder how you’ll ever muster the energy and desire to accomplish just one item? The last few weeks have been like that for me; I don’t really know why, but I have a hankering that I wasn’t leaning solely on Jesus for my strength.

It’s All Got to Go: We’re Giving Away (Some of) Our Stuff!

We’re cleaning out our spare bedroom and garage, and we need to get rid of some of our junk. We’re hoping, though, that our junk will be someone else’s treasure. If you’re interested in any of it, please e-mail me at sarahjoaustin@gmail.com. Everything is first-come-first-serve, and it’ll be your responsibility to arrange to come get whatever you want.

Here’s the beginning of the list, I’m sure I’ll add to it as we continue to clean. If you want more details or pictures, let me know.

  • Black entertainment center (some wear and tear)
  • 2 Sony surround speakers (with stands)
  • Chrome and red stool
  • Stool with chrome legs and upholsteredish seat
  • Brass chandelier
  • Fish Mate water filter
  • 2 water pumps
  • 2 ceramic pond frogs

Please take this stuff off our hands—if you don’t, we’ll be forced to throw it away!

That One Thing

Turns out I can’t do everything. I try to do everything, and most of the time, I can do most things pretty well. And if I’m completely clueless, I usually hike up my pants, say to myself, “You’ve got a Master’s degree. You can figure it out,” and give it my best shot.

And that’s how my morning started. By 10:30, the seemingly simple switch from cable to DSL at work had me cursing under my breath. Turns out, I’m not good at networking: computer or social.

Next time, I’ll leave it to the experts (i.e. Ben, the rockin’ LPC intern).

Two Words: Good Friday!

Can I just say that I have the best job in the world? I have today—Thursday—off for Good Friday! Ironically, I woke up at 4:30, went to Tone to the Max, came home and ate breakfast, showered, and took a quick nap before heading to Bible study.

Hmm, what should I do for the rest of the day? Maybe another nap, some work on a freelance project, and some reading. Who knows how the day might go! More later…

Good Sleep Comes to Those Who Wait

Last night I slept like an angel, like a baby, like a log, like a woman who’s suffered the effects of Daylight Savings Time for four days. I had already scheduled a vacation day, so I skipped Bible study (oops…didn’t do my homework all week) and slept in.

And now I’m home in Clinton, spending a few days with my family—you know, getting in visits with grandparents, mooching off my parents, and generally being lazy. Heck, I’m even screening my phone calls and enjoying Mom’s semi-high-speed Internet.

Mom and I went to the community center this afternoon to run/walk. I “ran” 3 miles and felt really good. I have a 7-miler plotted out for Saturday; hopefully all will go well.

More later. I must get back to slacking off.

Kill Me, Kill Me Now

Ugh…I hate Daylight Savings Time. I know it’s four days after the fact, but I haven’t had a decent night of sleep since Saturday. Every night, I try to go to bed at my “normal” time, but I stay awake until 1 AM. Of course, I’m getting up at my “normal” hour, so I’m netting 1-2 hours of sleep less a night than I was last week, which is why I didn’t work out yesterday morning (and tomorrow isn’t looking good either). This was a good problem in college when I used the extra hour of up time to study; however, I did skip a lot of my morning classes when DST rolled around.

I’m trying to suck it up and deal with the time change. After all, everyone else has. And I don’t mind the extra daylight in the evenings…

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. —1 Corinthians 1:18
