100-Mile / 8-Week Challenge: The Final Countdown

Officially, the 100-Mile Challenge ended on February 25, but I’m a slacker and never posted my results. At last count, I was at 93 miles and needed just seven more self-propelled miles to finish the challenge. The last two weeks of the challenge, my knee started giving me problems again, so getting mileage in was a bit hard, but I managed to get in one mile of running and six miles of biking the Friday before the challenge ended.

I certainly didn’t think I would be cutting it that close, but I finished it, and I really enjoyed myself. The challenge was a great way to keep moving throughout the winter. I’m sure I’ll do it again next year!

100-Mile / 8-Week Challenge: Week 7

How disappointing. Last week, I was just seven miles away from my goal, and I didn’t meet it this week! The ice storm ruined my chances of getting out of my neighborhood and my mother-in-law’s house Monday and Tuesday, and then I came down with a cold that first settled in my chest before moving to my head. Because of that, the only running that happened was from my nose. Hmm…how many miles has my nose run this week? No sweat on the goal. I’ll meet it this week for sure!

I’m back at work today, but I still don’t feel 100%. I’m probably pushing 80–85% with a major attitude problem. There’s nothing like coming in to work to find your office trashed—chalk another one up to sharing my office with 300 people on Sundays. It really wasn’t trashed, but at least 10 different things weren’t in the right place: the trash can, the stapler, a magnet, chairs, the tissue box, etc. And then I went into the kitchen to make my oatmeal, and it was a mess. Crushed animal crackers on the floor, an open package of cookies—it’s no wonder we have a rat problem around here. I just don’t understand why people can’t take ownership of their own church. I mean, I would never go to someone’s home and leave things worse than I found them! I understand that sometimes we don’t feel like we should throw something away (that’s a big problem around here) because “someone” “might” “need” “it” (sarcasm emphasized), but geez, grow a pair and throw your crap away!

Some of us have joked that we should let the church go to crap by not bringing in our out-sourced cleaning peeps in for a month. Then people would see that, “Hey, if I don’t pick up my trash, no one else is going to do it for me, and when I get to church next week, I’ll have to sit in my own filth.” That is, if they even notice. I’m not saying people are stupid, but let’s face it, we’re all a little self-obsessed even on Sunday mornings at church, and in the haste of making plans for lunch and finding our kids who are running around wreaking havoc on the rest of the building, we forget to put things back where we found them, throw our trash away, and generally leave things better than they were before.

Ugh! I hate venting like this, but I don’t want to be the passive-aggressive office manager with the sign, “Your mom doesn’t work here. Clean up after yourself.” posted in her office. That’s all the soapboxing I have for today…

100-Mile / 8-Week Challenge: Week 6

I’ve seven miles to go until I meet my 100 mile goal for 2008! That’s right, I’m up to 93 miles in just six weeks.

I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow for my knee. I’m just going to my family doctor because that will be cheaper than going to a specialist right away. Hopefully, by this time next week, we’ll know what’s wrong with it. Then we’ll be able to make it better.

Chris and I are iced in today. Yep, an ice storm hit the Ozarks this morning, and the weather man said to stay home if you can, so that’s what we’re doing. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the foresight to go grocery shopping yesterday, so we’re out of orange juice and milk. That means I can’t make waffles or pancakes or mac ‘n cheese, which are our comfort food staples around here.

We were crazy last night and stayed up until nearly 3 to finish our Financial Peace University homework. We’re taking the course through our church, and we’re working to get our finances in order. Last night’s assignment was a working budget, savings plan, extra income plan, and cash flow. We started at 8 and worked until 3, but we finished it!

Hmm, not much else to report, so I’ll sign off for now. Just don’t be surprised if make some random posts this afternoon. These soap operas are pretty boring!

100-Mile / 8-Week Challenge: Week 5

Only three weeks of this challenge left, and I only have 29 miles left! That’s right, I’m up to 71 miles. Thank you, cycling class!

And it looks like I’ll be in cycling class a little more often in the next few days (or weeks). I had an excellent six-miler Saturday afternoon and probably could have gone another mile or two, but my knee flared up again. Pooh.

So I have a new game plan:

  1. First, find out what’s wrong with said knee by going to the doctor. Get whatever x-rays, MRIs, etc. that are necessary and suck up the price tag.
  2. Second, rehab like crazy and follow doctor’s orders. Find a good physical therapist if necessary.
  3. Third, get happy with Plan B. I might not be able to run the half-marathon in April, but I can go and cheer for Sarah (I already have signs). I will likely be spending a lot of time in cycling class, which will get me ready for the MS 150 in September. So far, cycling has not hurt my knee. Actually, the only thing that hurts my knee is running.
  4. Fourth, be content with the outcome. I asked the Lord to break me back in the summer, and he certainly didn’t pick the way I wanted. He took away Linden (stupid Germany), and he is messing with my running; however, I am going to rejoice in my trials even if I feel like the whole world is crashing around me.

That said, my “training plan” this week looks like this:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday: 40-minute cycling class
  • Tuesday and Thursday: 60-minute Tone to the Max class + 45-minute Yoga for Athletes class
  • Saturday: Hmm, we’ll see. Maybe it’ll be nice enough that I can ride my bike outside.

In a related knee note, I wonder if bad knees are hereditary? My dad has had arthroscopic surgery for torn menisci for both his knees, one grandpa has had one knee replaced, and the other has had both knees replaced. I’d like to think that the manual labor they do/did (i.e. climbing on and off construction equipment and crawling under houses) is really the problem. Since I don’t do either of those things, I hope I’m not destined for knee problems, too.

OK, I’ve rambled way to much for one little post. More later…

100-Mile / 8-Week Challenge: Week 4

We’re half-way through the 100-Mile / 8-Week Challenge, and I’m just under halfway finished with my miles. In sum, I’m at 47 miles, and I’m feeling pretty good about finishing. I’m mostly running, so the miles add up slowly, but I can pad the numbers with a cycling class or two if it really comes down to the wire. More next week…

100 Mile / 8-Week Challenge: Week 3

I think I’ve redeemed myself this week—week three’s mileage brings me to 31.45 miles, which gets me back on track for the eight-week challenge.

Did some speed work on the treadmill tonight: 5 x 400m at 5K pace. Not especially easy, but it wasn’t as bad as I anticipated. And the treadmill helps me to know how fast I’m supposed to be moving.

Yesterday I did a “long run” of four miles at the Y. It’s so stinkin’ cold right now that I hate venturing outside. In fact, I went outside for about three minutes on Saturday, but my cheeks were so cold, that I turned around and came home, which is why I spent yesterday afternoon on the indoor track. After the four miles, I did some plyometrics: butt kicks, high knees, bounds, and strides—twice each.

All in all, I can’t complain about how well I’ve bounced back from knee problems. I have a healthy lifestyles appointment at the Y on Friday, and my consultant is a runner, so I’m going to talk to her about my running/cross training/strength training/yoga/speed schedule. If all continues to go well, half marathon training starts Monday!

100-Mile / 8 Week Challenge: Week 2

I’m off to a slow start on my own challenge: a mere 9.8 miles in sum. But in my defense, I am taking a two different strength training classes two times a week each, so I am getting in my exercise. I did two miles this morning walking and running (but mostly running), and my knee still feels good. I guess it really takes time off due to an injury to really appreciate being healthy! I’m calling the next two weeks half-marathon preliminary training; if all continues to go well with my knee, I’ll officially start training for the Country Music Half Marathon on Monday, 1/28! More mileage next week…I swear!

Give Me 8 Weeks, and I’ll Give You 100 Miles: The 2008 100-Mile Challenge

Swim it. Walk it. Bike it. Run it. Or elliptical machine it. Or inline skate it. Or skateboard it. However you do it, just do 100 miles. Starting today, 1 January 2008, you and I have eight weeks to complete 100 self-propelled miles. The challenge ends on 24 February.

R-U-N? Of course you are! Here’s what you need to do:

  • If you’re a blogger, commit to the challenge on your blog and post your progress at least once a week.
  • If you’re not a blogger, join the Awesome Runners group on LogYourRun.com and post your progress there.

If you complete the challenge, you’ll be entered in a drawing for a little door prize (and by little, I mean small and cheap but fun). Let’s get moving in the New Year!
