An Update

The whole family stayed in tonight. Three of the four of us are asleep on their respective loveseats and ottomans. As for me, I worked on a commissioned afghan. Projects like this are addictive: just one more row, let me finish this skein.

Working to balance LPC, OTC, and all my other miscellaneous projects this week. It’s not easy not having total control of my schedule, but I’m making my free time at LPC count. Just 30 more days until I’m done!

As for the new year, I don’t do resolutions because I’d rather resolve an issue when it comes up not when the calendar changes. In light of upcoming work changes, one goal for the family is to eat out less. A lot less. Which means I’m cooking more. Which means the kitchen in perpetually a mess. But we’re having friends over for dinner more often. Always a good thing.

I’m also back on the abs diet. Again, it’s not a diet as much as it is a reasonable eating plan. It just requires a fun amount of planning and grocery shopping–my favorite. I’m horrible about varying what I eat during the day, so I’m trying to at least work in some variety in my meals from week to week.

I’m sure I’ve put you to sleep with these updates, so I’m off to bed. More soon!

The Sarah Report: It’s the Same Old, Same Old

I’ve been writing a lot about Twitter and Church 2.0 and work a lot, which is good if you’re interested in those types of things. Maybe it’s not so good if you just want to keep up with your old friend Sarah Jo. Since it’s Friday, I thought I might take a break from writing about the stuff that interests me and write about some stuff that interests you: Me!

Honestly, I don’t feel like you all need much of a Sarah update because I live a pretty boring life, but here are some things you might find interesting:

  • I am still working my way through my Hemingway anthology. I made it through The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms, but I’m stuck in the middle of For Whom the Bell Tolls. I’m having trouble sticking with it. I’ll pick it up for a few days and right when I start gaining momentum in the book, I lose it. I am determined to get through it, for I still have to read The Old Man and the Sea afterwards. And then there are five other anthologies I need to get through. So much to read; so little time.
  • I’m not running much. In fact, I haven’t ran since January, and I only worked out three times in February. Pathetic, I know. Even so, I’m sticking pretty closely to the Abs Diet, and I lost another pound or two in February. The Other Sarah offered to take me to her Crossfit classes in March during a trial period, so starting next week, I’ll have muscles so sore I can’t type.
  • I’m growing my hair out. It’s getting really long, about as long as it was when I got married nearly four years ago. And I’m on this kick where I just wash and wear it. No styling or straightening. A little gel. A comb-through. A tousle with the towel. And I’m out the door.
  • I have recently become obsessed with graphic t-shirts and cute flats. I have always been a flip flops, jeans, and t-shirt kind of girl, and even now, years after my adolescence was supposed to have ended, I’m still sporting the same style. Only this time it’s not baggy, cheap tees; it’s tees from Express. And well, the brighter, more colorful the flat shoes, the better.
  • I’m in love with sushi. It’s like my new pizza. I want it all the time.

And that’s about all that’s happening with me. What’s been happening with you?

Five Pounds + Back Fat

Today’s post is going to be a quickie because I need to get back to editing footnotes. Those of you who follow me on Twitter or are my friend on Facebook can also follow my frenetic editing adventure there.

Anyway, Chris and I have been following the Abs Diet since the New Year, obsessively bagging servings of nuts, veggies, fruit, and Triscuits after our weekly trip to Walmart and the grocery store. Today, I am happy to announce that I’ve lost five pounds in four weeks. Yea!

Now I’m not the type of girl who obsesses over numbers on the scale because as long as I feel good and my clothes fit, I feel like I’m in the black. Somewhere amongst triathlon training last summer and a rather sedentary fall, I started to feel not so good. My pants weren’t fitting right, my boobs were weird, and I was developing back fat. Bleh.

So in the last month, I’ve been sticking closely to a 1700-calorie/day diet with one free meal a week plus I’ve been weight lifting and running (when it’s not icy or too cold), and I’ve lost five pounds. W00t! I’ve never so closely counted the calories I take in, and I think my constant awareness of the value (both caloric and nutritional) has helped me the most in my effort to annihilate the back fat.

And Chris is counting his calories, too, and he’s helping with food prep, which also has made a huge difference. It helps when the one you live with is also on board.

And I realize this is only five pounds, but I’m not on The Biggest Loser, so I don’t need to lose a literal ton of weight. Maybe just 10% of my original body weight, which was 155 (I’m not afraid to say it) and which would get me down to about 140. And my suspicious back fat is disappearing and my boobs are getting back to normal. My pants, however, still aren’t fitting quite right, which simply means that I get to go shopping for dress pants this week because I’m going to a wedding and all of my dress pants tug and wrinkle in “areas,” which is a surefire sign they don’t fit right.

OK, back to editing.

Does Measuring My Food = Insanity?

I’m not sure if it was the nutrition seminar last week, but this week I’m on this nutrionista kick. I’ve been following the Abs Diet with mediocrity all summer—which means I followed the plan during the day and quasi-pig out in the evening. This week I am not only following the plan as tediously as possible, but I bought a food scale to measure my turkey and cheese (and Baked Cheetos).

And this is the rundown of my eating plan while I’m at work:

  • Breakfast: Fiber One bar (150) + hard-boiled egg (70)
  • Mid-morning snack: V8 (35) + 25 almonds (210)
  • Lunch: Turkey (45) and cheese (80) BBQ sauce (50) sandwich (bread–100) + fruit cup (70) + Baked Cheetos (65)
  • Mid-afternoon snack: Apple (75) + peanut butter (188)

Then in the evenings we’re eating some whole-grain carbs and some good protein. Of course, last night I sort of ruined my day with a sugar cookie at Churchill’s (but hey, I was working hard on that thesis).

So now I’m watching The Biggest Loser, and I’m glad that I resisted the urge to stop at McDonald’s for chicken McNuggets and fries on the way home…but something fried sounds good. I still have my mid-evening snack left…I’ll have to raid my cabinets for something yummy—but healthy.

EDIT I gave in and went to Sonic for cheddar bites for 360 calories. But they were SO worth it!

Oh, and thanks to Taryn for the heads up about the Champion bra sale (and if you buy a bra, be sure to get the discount code from Taryn’s post—it saved me $8 plus shipping)! I bought two for the price of one! Oh, happy day, indeed!
