Day of the Dead Couple

I gotta share with you a cute couple I crocheted for a customer before Christmas. Meet the Day of the Dead Guy and Gal:

How cute are they?! I found their pattern in Creepy, Cute Crochet. I bought this book last fall, and this was my first project to tackle. Isn’t the guy handsome?
Don’t you love the top hat and boutonniere?

Isn’t she pretty? Don’t you love her wreath?

I think their button eyes make them endearing!

I had a ton of fun making them. Lots of little details to make them special! I like going back and forth between little projects like this pair and big projects like afghans. The former take a lot of concentration, but I can finish them quickly; the latter generally have a pattern I can memorize, but they work up in less time.

Camo Blocks Afghan

One fun thing I did for Christmas this year was make gifts for everyone on my list. The afghan below was commissioned by my dad and made for my niece (his granddaughter) Livie Jo. The only directions I got from him were: Livie needs a camo blanket. A big one.

I found this pattern in an old Workbasket magazine. (Mom had a bunch and I photocopied the crochet patterns to keep.) I already had the camouflage yarn and most of the black yarn. I only had to buy the green yarn and an extra skein of black.

Here’s the picture of the afghan while I was steaming it into shape:

And a picture of it on my couch:

And a closeup. The pattern was easy peasy: Double crochet and single crochet.

This is one of my first commissioned (i.e. paid) projects, and I have a few more to share. I’m working toward getting pictures of my work on Flickr and Facebook; eventually, I’d like to do an Etsy store, too. Thoughts? Brilliantly creative? Gigantic idiot?

Meet Hashiru: My Newest Crobot

Check out my latest amigurumi creation! She’s a geisha crobot, and I made her for Other Sarah. Since Other Sarah is an avid runner, this geisha is named Hashiru, which is Japanese for ‘run.’

In related craftiness news, I’m working to make many of my gifts this Christmas. Handmade goodness is especially fun/necessary in this economy! Plus, I’m working my way through my yarn stash. I’m up to my eyeballs in yarn, but that’s what winter is for: cozying up with a project, a movie, and (in my house) a cat/project inspector.

Hope you like Hashiru! If you’d like your own crobot, creepy cute creature or animal, I custom make them for $10-20 each (depending on size).

How I Organized My Yarn Stash (and Started Using it Up)

In May, my sister-in-law Kim gave me two huge boxes full of yarn that she’s never used. Loved this because it saved me from having to buy yarn for those miscellaneous projects that come up from time to time. But there was so much that there was no way to organize it without some help. Seriously, look at the stash in the picture below. This is all the yarn excluding the specialty yarns and the five skeins of black yarn.

I scoured the Internet looking for a solution, but I couldn’t find anything that was both attractive and utilitarian. I wanted to be able to see all of my collection in case I was looking for a particular color, but Chris wanted something that was contained, ideally behind a door or in a box somewhere. Neither of us wanted the spare bedroom to become the “craft room.”

Thankfully, my incredible, awesome husband realized that I would not rest until my yarn was organized, and he remembered that we needed a closet system for that room anyway, so he and I picked out a system at Lowe’s that would both hold all my yarn and many cables and electronics we need access to. Plus, there’s three rods to hang clothes on, so this closet has now become home to my wedding dress and Chris’s kilt. (Don’t ask.) And there’s room to spare, so when a guest comes, they’ll have a place to hang their clothes. Here’s the pic:

Drawers on bottom for cords and specialty yarns. Skeins of sport-weight yarn on top. Smaller balls of yarn hanging in a shoe bag. Don’t you just love the rainbow?

Me, too. Which is why I promptly started what Chris has christened the Fiest-Afghan. Here are the pieces laid out:

So it’s a little bright, but it used up a lot of the bits and pieces I had floating around, and once finished, it will use up an entire skein of navy blue yarn. Each of the above squares will get a navy blue round and the entire afghan will get a navy blue border. And it already has a home. My pal Lyndsey is going to get it! Yea!

I have some more projects in my queue. Two crobots. One for Sarah. One for Another Chris. Baby afghan for my upcoming niece Livie Jo. (Have I told you how excited I am about this kid?) Then we’ll see what happens. I have at least six skeins of camoflage yarn to use for something. Anyone know any hunters who need a sweater? :)

Refashioning Old, Misfit Sweaters Into Cute, Crocheted Cardigans

Sheesh! What a day! What a week! Where have I been? Oh, you know, I’ve been up to general craftiness. In a wind of inspiration, I’ve been scouring my closet for clothes that can be recycled in one way or another. I have a whole stack of t-shirts and blue jeans that are aching to be cut into strips and crocheted into rugs or baskets, plus I have a whole pile of boxy turtleneck sweaters that I must either make a bit more feminine with some tailoring or that will make fabulous throw pillows. But I was most excited about two sweaters, one purple, one yellow, that begged to be refashioned into springy cardigans because every girl needs a fresh spring cardigan.

Old Purple Sweater

I tackled the purple sweater first. My best friend Jenny may recognize it as the Christmas gift she gave me a few years ago. I love the color, but it’s a little snug, which doesn’t exactly make it work appropriate, so I laid it out on my table and went to work.

Sarah Straightening Sweater

My mother-in-law let me borrow her sewing machine (just having it on my dining room table makes me want to tackle projects!), and I cut the front straight up the middle. I gave the new edges some zigzag stitches to keep them intact and used some sock yarn to crochet them up Sarah style. I also chopped off the sleeves to make them 3/4 length and crocheted around their edges, too. Here’s the finished product:

Sarah in the Purple Sweater

Oh, and I added a button. It’s fancy.

Purple Sweater Details

Here’s the cardigan draped across my chair. (I don’t have one of those seamstress form-y things.)

The yellow sweater was next. I loved this sweater’s color, and something in the store made me think it was awesome, but it never really worked. I think it was supposed to be worn off the shoulder or something because the color was uber wide and a little too short. Chopping it up the front was a little precarious. The knit pattern was pretty loose, so I couldn’t secure it with the machine, but I also didn’t want any of the stitches to fall out. I managed to keep them intact while crocheting up and down the new edges.

Sarah in Yellow Sweater

I used the same sock yarn that I used on the other sweater. I love this yarn because it has some great colors in it, so I can wear these sweaters with just about any t-shirt in my closet. Perfection.

After crocheting, I tweaked the shoulder seams. I pinched and pinned them in place. I sewed some new seams so the sweater didn’t look weird. I may whip out a button to secure the top, but overall, I’m very happy with the outcome.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. I have a little bit before I need to start on the next big project (an afghan for my niece who is arriving in September), so I bought an amigurumi robot book, and I’m crocheting an army of robots from remnants of yarn from old projects. Uber cute! I’ll post pics when I’ve got some ready for battle.

Springfield Bloggers Association Meet-up Tonight!

Quick, quick, quick post this morning. Huge day at work. It’s only 8:55 and I’ve already hit the ground running. Just wanted to remind all the Springfield, Missouri, bloggers that we have a Springfield Bloggers Association meeting tonight at Patton Alley Pub at 7 PM. And since I’m “in charge” of this meeting and I’ve never attended one of these meetings before, things could get interesting. As an extra side of motivation, my hubby wrapped up a Springfield Bloggers Association logo for us last night, and if you attend, you’ll get a sneak peak at it!

Personally, I’m sort of playing catch-up from my three days out of town last week. I’m so thankful I got to spend time with my family. We ate well, played board games, visited my aunt’s farm and her farm babies, and just had a great time with one another. I have pictures from the weekend that will probably be published tomorrow. I’m also in this weird crafty mood lately. All I want to do is crochet or sew or paint or go antiquing. Last night, I refashioned an old Old Navy sweater into a fun little cardigan, and I’ll have pics of it this week, too.

OK, Springfield bloggers, I’ll see you tonight, and my other wonderful readers, I’ll talk to you tomorrow!

The Weather Outside is Frightful, but the Fire is so Delightful

There are just twelve shopping days left until Christmas, which means there are four days until graduation and five days until dinner at Kai with the Fros. I’m uber stoked about all three! Chris and I ordered the remainder of our online gifts last night, and I made my list of remaining Christmas gifts to purchase. I’m off to make a few Ozark/Nixa purchases after work, and tomorrow night I’m heading in Springfield for a trip to Missouri State (for the cap and gown), Hobby Lobby, PetsMart, and Target.

My bum is still incredibly sore from my fall down the garage steps last Wednesday, but I don’t have any bruising. It’s the strangest thing. Bending over, sitting down, and standing up all hurt horribly, so working out my bottom half is out of the question. That and Ice Storm 2007 Part II is rolling through the Ozarks, so running outside is a bit treacherous, too.

I must say that I do love this weather and this time of year. We’ve had a fire in the fireplace almost every night; I’ve been crocheting fun little scarves, mittens, and hats; we’ve been watching random movies whenever we want; and I made snickerdoodles Saturday night. Yum!

ACL Stands for A Crappy Leg

I ran yesterday! Yes, just three miles, but it was dark outside and blissfully chilly. My hip is feeling so much better than it was around the half marathon. But my knee hurts. It has hurt on every run since the half marathon. I admit that I pushed it last night, so I deserve all the pain I’ve been in since last night, but I’m starting to get concerned. I sent an e-mail to the Physician’s Assistant for his diagnosis (i.e. whether my symptoms are bad enough to warrant going to the doctor). I also entered my symptoms on WebMD.com and all of my symptoms match up with an ACL injury, though I don’t have all the symptoms listed for a serious ACL injury (just a minor one). The ACL explanation says there’s often a pop in the knee at the time of the injury, and that’s what I can’t figure out. I started having symptoms during the half marathon, but I can’t remember doing anything to injure myself! Now granted, I had some pain medicine in me during the race, but surely I would have felt or heard something.

I had a minor moment of freaking out this morning when I read all this. If this is indeed an ACL injury, a marathon this spring is probably out of the picture. That sucks, but I can deal with it as long as I can find something else to do physically. But instead of thinking about all that, I’ll just go home and do some strength training tonight and await word from the PA. That and watch the Biggest Loser, the Dancing with the Stars Finale, and work on my winter crochet project. More later…
