Social Media Guru I’m Not

After reading this humbling post from ReadWriteEnterprise this weekend, I am repenting for ever thinking of myself as a social media expert. (No, I never said it out loud, but it still counts if you think it.)

Where did I ever get the notion that I’m a smartypants? I can definitely trace it back to grad school and my thesis, which had the phrase Web 2.0 in the title. That’s when I started researching the church and how Web 2.0 was affecting how the church does church. But that was two years ago, and and it is terrifying how out-of-date my thesis is. But I’m still doing work in this field: web development for my church; managing our Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts; working with our volunteers who like playing with these things, too. See, I have experience. I’m not a social media idiot.

So last week, I started a new experiment in Twitter. OK, not really an experiment, but I resolved to engage more people in conversations and to share the stuff I think is interesting. (For a long time, I’ve done very little sharing about the things I love–like social media, blogging, running, crocheting, etc.–because, well, I thought it was a good idea at the time.) And all the experts (who are indeed experts and not gigantic idiots like myself) say that I should do these things so people will like me to build the value of my Twitter profile. And I’ve also been building some value by playing with Twitter’s new lists function. And I’ve been looking for new local people and new social media experts to follow. It’s been fun.

And what is the purpose of this post? I’m not sure. I just wanted to let you know that I’m not a social media expert. I have so much to learn, but what I am learning, I’ll be sharing here and on Twitter. And what am I? We’ll wrap up everything I love about social media (blogging, tweeting, Facebook, YouTube, etc.), tie a bow on it, and call me a social media enthusiast.

Time to vote on this social media’s narcissist’s repentance. Brilliantly creative or gigantic idiot?

Facebook Sans Facebook.com: How I’ve Automated My Facebook Use

I attended a social media think tank meeting yesterday, and while we were introducing ourselves and explaining what we do for our livings and how we use social media, something occurred to me: I rarely go to Facebook.com any more. I chalk some of this up to Facebook’s new format, which I don’t whole-heartedly find easy to use, but I rarely login to Facebook because I have automated all of my Facebook tasks to make me look like I’m online and to send Facebook functions to me. I thought I might share these automated functions with you today to a) educate you and b) find out if there’s anyone else like me out there.

Status Updates via TweetDeck

First off, the Status Update. For a long time, I sent everything I posted to Twitter to my Facebook status. Yes, there’s an app for that. Turns out, my Facebook friends are not the same audience as my Twitter friends, so I turned off that function because I was annoying them and myself. But I was still too lazy to login to Facebook to make status updates. Then TweetDeck released a new version of itself, which included Facebook status functionality and allowed me to send tweets to Twitter, Facebook, or both.

At the same time, TweetDeck will also collect the Facebook status updates from my friends and put them in their own TweetDeck column. Now I have a running feed of what my friends are saying on Facebook. I am so lazy.

Notes via RSS Feed

Some people choose to use their Facebook Notes like a blog, and aside for feeling sorry for them for not having real blogs, I don’t have a ton of time to read through all their memes about high school and their kids. But I still feel compelled to do something with those notes. After all, something might be interesting once in a blue moon. Facebook creates an RSS feed of my friends’ notes, so I read those notes in Google Reader. While Facebook’s RSS generator does a lousy job of maintaining any semblance of formatting Notes allows, I get an general idea of what’s going on in the note, and if I need formatting, I can go back to Facebook for it.

Essential Email Notifications

Some notifications on Facebook are essential to know about pronto. I’m thinking Message notifications and Wall postings primarily, but I also want to know if I’ve been tagged in a note, photo, or video or if someone has commented on anything of mine. Facebook emails me every time something of this sort happens on my profile, and those emails go in a tidy little folder in Gmail, so they don’t clutter up my inbox. The important thing is that these notifications are sent to me; I don’t have to fetch them by logging in. If they require action, I can login at my leisure.

I find some notifications that Facebook offers pesky and choose not to receive notification of them because the information they provide does not warrant immediate action. For example, being invited to a group. That can wait. Being invited to an event. I’m antisocial and not in college, so that can wait. Being added as someone’s friend. That can wait. (Because if we’re not already friends on Facebook, well, you get the picture…)

My Self-Declared Best Practices

I follow a few self-declared best practices to keep my Facebook time to a minimum. For one, I rarely add applications. The ones I do add usually have some function that allows me to do something in Facebook automatically. The others are silly and a waste of time, and I block them. I also rarely chat on Facebook. I rarely chat period. I actually am not a fan of chatting unless you’re a really close friend. And when I can, I try to move Message conversations into email. (Seriously, I really hate the Message function in Facebook. Let’s face it, those are essentially emails, and emails belong in my Gmail Inbox. Period.)

My One Facebook Vice

Now, the one thing I have no qualms about logging in to Facebook for is posting photos. I have no problem logging in to post my photos on Facebook. I do have a problem logging in to look at photos on Facebook because I can waste so much time looking at pictures. And then when I don’t look at them, I miss some good ones, and that sucks. Unfortunately, there is no good way to be notified of those automatically.

I hope you understand that I’m not anti-Facebook. I’m just a firm believer that information should come to me and that I shouldn’t have to check Facebook every other second to see if someone did something new. Maybe I’m a little bit lazy, but that’s fine with me, darn it.

So am I wrong? Is there something inherently awesome in Facebook that I must be logged in 24/7? Or are you just like me, logging in only for the bare Facebook essentials? Tell me!

25 Perfectly Normal Things About Sarah

It is a another Facebook Notes meme Saturday, and this one has me looking incredibly vain because it is all about me (and my great hair). Simply put, it’s 25 random things about me (and yes, I published it on Facebook earlier this year). Enjoy your Saturday!

  1. Sarah’s least favorite meat is chicken. She prefers steak, fish, pork, seafood, etc. over chicken any day of the week.
  2. That said, Sarah loves Mexican food. In close second: BBQ.
  3. Sarah bungee jumped when she was 16 and wants to sky dive eventually (though Chris will probably never let it happen).
  4. Sarah loves driving, especially on warm days with good music on the radio.
  5. Sarah also loves National Public Radio and listens to WBUR (the Boston station) somewhat obsessively when she is at work.
  6. Sarah does not own Apple Bottom jeans or boots with fur, but she loves the song “Shorty Got Low.”
  7. Sarah has traveled to China and Mexico on mission trips. On both, God confirmed that Sarah is not meant for long-term overseas missions.
  8. Sarah works at a church, which is the last place she ever dreamed of working. Ironically, the job is perfect for her because she gets to wear jeans, t-shirts, and flip flops to work; manage her own time; and use her tech writing and web development skills. Plus, she gets to be hyper-anal about her filing systems.
  9. Sarah’s most-watched TV show in her collection is Friends, and her most-watched movie is The Cutting Edge.
  10. Sarah has seen U2, Bon Jovi, Daughtry, Coldplay, and Alison Kraus in concert. Bon Jovi, by far, put on the best show.
  11. Sarah follows the Abs Diet, which she emphatically insists is not a diet but a healthy lifestyle.
  12. Sarah, according to her father-in-law, is the luckiest card player in her husband’s family. She always has plenty of sevens and wild cards to spare when playing Canasta against Don.
  13. Sarah has natural highlights in her hair, which, she’s been told, are the envy of women everywhere. Plus, she saves tons of money on hair maintenance.
  14. Sarah also has incredibly thick hair. Every stylist she’s ever used comments on her hair’s thickness. She has to have it thinned every time she has it cut.
  15. Sarah is pale, but she’s not fair skinned. Her Indian blood allows her to tan pretty easily (that is, when she gets outside).
  16. Sarah prefers winter to summer. Her reasoning? When it’s hot, you can take off all your clothes and still be hot, but when you’re cold, you can always pile on the layers to get warm.
  17. Sarah speaks for her cats. Ravi and Mowgli each have distinctive voices, and she has full-fledged conversations with them. She’s been told it’s creepy to observe, but she comes from a long line of animal talkers. (Thanks, Mom!)
  18. Sarah’s favorite color is orange. This choice comes from Sarah’s love of being difficult and different. Everyone, she reasons, loves blue and green, but not many people are big fans of orange.
  19. Sarah hates crowds, loud noises, and surprises.
  20. Sarah makes her husband mop the floors in their house, but in return she cleans out the litterbox and cleans the toilets.
  21. Sarah has an idea for a novel cooked up in the back of her head, but every time she tries to flesh it out on the computer, it won’t materialize.
  22. Sarah guards her friendships and keeps only a few people uber-close, but she’s extremely loyal and puts her heart and soul into those close relationships.
  23. Sarah sang in every choir that was available from elementary school to high school, and she sang in the state music contest twice in high school. Once she got to college, she stopped singing because of some very intimidating well-sung friends and roommates.
  24. Sarah finds teaching the most unnatural thing in the world and hated teaching during her graduate assistantship. She currently teaches first- and second-graders on Sunday mornings at church and finds them no less intimidating but much more forgiving than college students.
  25. Sarah hates being first in command but loves being second in command. She hates when all responsibility for something falls on her shoulders but very much enjoys supporting whoever has that role. (Another reason she hates teaching and loves her job.)

Web Traffic Experiments—Changes, Tests, and Trends?

So, so, so much thinking. I am never bored with web development because there is always so much to research, study, do, and test. In the last week or so, I’ve been studying the traffic sources here at SarahJoAustin.com and over at LifePointOzark.com, and at both, we’re getting a growing amount of search engine traffic. That’s good, and I’m pretty sure I can attribute a lot of that growth to the use of the SEO All-in-One Pack, a WordPress plugin that allows me to add description and keyword meta tags to each post. Bueno.

But I’m concerned about a drop in the traffic from referring sites and direct traffic. It seems as though people are finding specific posts on SJA and LPO, but they’re not sticking around to check out the rest of the site. No bueno.

So I’ve made some adjustments to both sites and their RSS feeds, and I’m keeping tabs on the stats to see if anything changes. And in case it matters, I tend to develop SJA and LPO together because they use the same WordPress core and many of the same plugins, but their audiences are somewhat different. SJA has about 40 subscribers via RSS while LPO has about 130 via email. SJA has more followers on Twitter, but LPO has more fans on Facebook. The SJA readers tend to be a bit more on the bleeding edge of the Internet than LPO’s readers. There’s some overlap, but not much.

This was the state of SJA and LPO:

  • SJA and LPO were both imported to Facebook notes (my profile and the LPC page, respectively).
  • SJA and LPO were both fed to their respective Twitter accounts.
  • Both SJA and LPO RSS feeds were full text.
  • SJA’s Twitter account is fed to my Facebook status, so my tweets about SJA go to Facebook.

And this is what I changed:

  • Both SJA and LPO RSS feeds are summarized. About three lines of text are sent to the RSS feed, which means that I lose all text formatting and the first few sentences must compel people to click through to the web sites. Bleh. I don’t think this will be an issue for SJA, but I’m curious about LPO since many of its readers subscribe through email and are used to getting full text in their emails. At the same time, as LPO increases its content, summarized posts will keep the email brief and scannable.
  • Both SJA and LPO are still fed to their respective Twitter accounts. This allows readers an alternative method of subscribing to the RSS feed (by following these accounts). I added instructions to the LPO site for receiving updates via text message (via Twitter), so people can receive our feed via email, RSS, or text message/Twitter.
  • SJA is no longer imported to Facebook notes. My friends were commenting on my notes/posts in Facebook rather than commenting on SJA, which meant they were getting my content on FB rather than on SJA. I’m also working to delete my 300+ imported notes from FB. My friends can still read my headlines/recent posts in my FB status and can follow a link to my blog.
  • LPO still imports to Facebook notes. Now these are summarized notes, so LPC fans still have to go to the web site for complete info.
  • Both SJA and LPO utilize the WordPress 2.3 Related Posts plugin. This plugin finds related posts for the current page, and adds them to the bottom of the post. My hope is that SJA and LPO will be a bit more “sticky” and keep readers around for longer spans of time.

It’s been about a week, so any “trends” in traffic are hard to decipher with so little data; however, there is some difference in the stats from Google Analytics:

  • On SJA, direct traffic is up about 26% and referring site traffic is up about 22%.
  • On LPO, direct traffic and referring site traffic are both up about 1%.
  • For SJA, clicks from Facebook have increased about 31%, 23 clicks to 35 clicks.
  • For LPO, clicks from Facebook have increased 257%, from 7 clicks to 25 clicks.
  • Visits, unique visitors, and pageviews are up on both sites. On SJA, 30-47%, and on LPO, 2-5%.

My best guess for the increase in SJA traffic is the closure of BloggersGuide.net last week. Any traffic that was going there is being redirected to SJA. And for the increase in LPO Facebook clicks, we added a bunch of old pictures to our page and discontinued our Picasa web albums, and our people are getting tagged in those albums and those tags are appearing in news feeds across Facebook. There are too many variables to know whether my traffic plan is working, but I’m hoping these mini trends are a sign of what’s to come. As always, I’ll keep you posted.

The Skittles Social Media Dream: Taste the Rainbow

2061152451_8b055e389a_mThe blogosphere and the twittersphere were abuzz about Skittles.com yesterday. Before you read the rest of the post, check it out (you’ll have to provide your birthday and agree to the terms and conditions) and report back to me. Interesting, huh? Essentially, Skittles is utilizing the power of social media–using what Skittle eaters were already saying–to generate Skittles.com content on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr.

Everyone has had an opinion, and I know the hype will die down quickly, as all things do on the Internet, but I gotta say, I think Skittles got it right. Skittles figured out that people will come to their site to look up nutritional information or to contact the company, but those same people won’t stick around for much else. But they might already be talking on Twitter about the Skittles snack they’re eating. Or they might join other Skittle eaters in a group on Facebook. Or they might take a cool photo of Skittles to share on Flickr. Or they might make a Skittles-themed video for YouTube. I don’t eat a lot of Skittles, but I might be inclined to check out Skittles on these sites.

As a web developer who is quickly becoming a social media nut, I’m totally envious of all that content, all those users. Talk about a dream! I struggle with LifePoint Online (our entire online presence) and the lack of participation on our web site and on our Facebook page. We’re getting to know Twitter. We’re on YouTube, but not much is happening there because we haven’t really pushed it. And we’re not on Flickr (yet?). I’m not sure who’s fault it is, this lack of participation. On one hand, I’m probably a little too gung-ho on this whole social media craze, but am I wrong to see its possibilities at LifePoint? On the other hand, many of our people are just now getting on the social media train, and it’s not their fault we’re remedial social networkers. We’re in the Midwest, the Ozarks. Things move a little slow here.

So I guess I’m just dreaming today. Tasting the social media rainbow, so to speak. Imagining what might someday be for LifePoint Online.
