Triathlon Training: Week 7

Wow! Last week was so much more productive than the previous two combined! Of course, I’m pretty sure my increased motivation came from an increasing number on my bathroom scale. I haven’t checked my body fat percentage in a long time, but I’m hoping the few pounds I’ve gained are a result of increased muscle mass rather than an increase in body fat. I certainly haven’t increased in inches anywhere, and my clothes still fit fine. We just happen to live in a “vanity number” society, and even though we’re healthy as horses, we hate the scales to reach certain numbers (and I’m getting a little too close for comfort to my vanity number). Here’s what I did this week:

Monday, July 14, 2008

  • Workout Type. Running
  • Route. Forest Park subdivision
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 33 minutes
  • Distance. 3 miles
  • Pace per mile. 11 min/mile
  • Additional notes. Felt good for being the first time I was out in a week! Even though I wanted to hit the road hard for an hour or so, I held myself back. I tend to work too hard on Mondays and Tuesdays and then have zero energy for workouts later in the week. I’m pacing myself.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

  • Workout type. Cycling class
  • Route. YMCA
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 59 minutes
  • Distance. 12.6 miles
  • Pace per mile. 4:40 minutes/mile
  • Additional notes. Our instructor didn’t show up, so I “warmed up” for 20 minutes before a sub took over. It’s encouraging to see that I can easily get in 12 miles in less than an hour, which will help me finish the triathlon in less than 2 hours.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

  • Workout type. Running
  • Route. Forest Park subdivision
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 58 minutes
  • Distance. 5 miles
  • Pace per mile. 11:40 minutes/mile
  • Additional notes. Still incorporating walking into my runs. I find that when I stop and walk when necessary, I can go faster when I’m actually running, so my overall time is faster, too. Even with all the time off from running this winter, my pace is right where I left it when I did the half marathon last fall.

Thursday, July 17, 2008

  • Workout type. Cycling class
  • Route. YMCA
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 46 minutes
  • Distance. 9.6 miles
  • Pace per mile. 4:48 minutes/mile
  • Additional notes. Just another cycling class. Actually, they’re getting to be old hat for me. Maybe I should look into learning how to teach a cycling class. Every time I get out of one, I think about the music I would use, how I would plan the class, and how I would encourage my students. Ooh, and if I teach, I could probably get a discount on my gym membership. Dave Ramsey would be proud!

Saturday, July 19, 2008

  • Workout type. Cycling (road)
  • Route. Forest Park subdivision (4 laps)
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 56 minutes
  • Distance. 12 miles
  • Pace per mile. 4:40 minutes/mile
  • Additional notes. I actually aired up my tires and rode outside! Of course, I was a genius and went out at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, and it was miserable, but I didn’t notice the heat until after I got off the bike. I did four 3-mile loops around my subdivision. My subdivision is by no means hilly, but it rolls in a few places, and I handled those spots just fine. I knew I could do 12 miles in cycling class, but I wasn’t sure once I got out on the road, so I was thrilled that this 12 miles was pretty easy for me. Once I finished, I dropped my bike in my yard and ran a lap around my block (4 minutes). That was the most painful part: for one, I realized just how hot it was. Secondly, I realized how much my quads had been working on my bike ride (I don’t have bike clips, which let you use your hamstrings more). My legs felt like jello for that four minutes. I’ll have to work on my transitions in the next month or so!

Triathlon Training: Weeks 5 & 6

I just realized I haven’t updated you all on the triathlon training in a few weeks. Two weeks ago I was on vacation, so I was pretty lazy, and last week was my first week back, and I slacked off. Even though I haven’t been over-the-top dedicated to training, I still feel good about the race.

I’ve only been cycling at the gym, so I suppose I’ll have to get on the road eventually. My dweeby mountain bike needs new tires, and I need a bike helmet before the big day. I hope to get those this week. I’m also trying to figure out what to wear on race day. I have a two-piece Tyr suit that will work, and I think I’ll pull on a pair of shorts and a tank top (with a support bra) after the swim. I’ll have to do a test ride/run with my wet suit and those clothes to see if they’ll work.

Here’s what I’ve been up to the last two weeks:

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

  • Workout Type. Cycling class + run (+ strength training)
  • Route. YMCA track
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 55 minutes + 35 minutes
  • Distance. 11 miles + 3 miles
  • Pace per mile. 5:00 + 11:40
  • Additional notes. First brick workout. Not too terrible. A few more of these will definitely help me prep for the race.

Saturday, July 5, 2008

  • Workout Type. 5k race
  • Route. Clinton, MO, Katy Trail
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 31:13
  • Distance. 3.1 miles
  • Pace per mile. 10:06
  • Additional notes. Excellent race! One of my fastest times in a while. Runners were bussed out 3 miles, and we ran back into town. The course is fast and flat, but it’s made of limestone gravel, so pebbles in the shoes were a problem. And there wasn’t much shade. I pushed myself a bit harder earlier in the race than I usually do. I was really pleased with my results.

Monday, July 7, 2008

  • Workout Type. Lap swim
  • Route. YMCA pool
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 50 minutes
  • Distance. 1250 yards
  • Pace per mile. N/A
  • Additional notes. No problems with the swim, though I’m starting to realize just how slow I am. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to swim all 300 yards just free stroking, but I think I can if I combine free stroke and the side stroke.

That’s pretty much all I did for two weeks. Pathetic, I know.

For-the-Love-of-Links Friday | 27 June 2008

Today’s link-lovin’ is brought to you by ScribeFire, this rock awesome little Firefox add-on that let’s me blog without logging in to WordPress.

That said, let’s get down to business. I honestly didn’t think I’d have much for you to read this week, but I was surprised by how much was on my list. If you read anything this week, be sure to check out “We all scream for ice cream.”

  • It’s Okay to Just Shut Up: Understanding Introversion. Anyone surprised that I’m an introvert? It’s not that I don’t like people; it’s that super-social situations wear me out, and I need more alone time than an extrovert to recover from them. I love how this author instructs us introverts to not apologize for our introversion. Even though extroverts make up 75% of the population, the rest of us are not freaks of nature.
  • The 100 Thing Challenge. This guy has the grand idea of narrowing everything he owns down to 100 items and living with just those items for a year. I don’t know if I could do it; I mean, what constitutes an item? Is my house an item? Are my books one item each or a collective item? One thing’s for sure: deodorant would definitely make my list.
  • You are a runner… I sure am. My body and mind take turns craving runs when I’ve spent too much time on the couch or when I’m stressed out. Running totally recharges me.
  • Are You Skilled Enough for the TSA’s “Black Diamond” Security Line? I’m sure this is more complicated than it sounds, but I think it’s brilliant! No, I probably don’t have the skills for the Black Diamond Security Line, but I could take on the Blue Square as long as no skiing is required.
  • Has modern life killed the semicolon? Next to the em dash, the semicolon is a favorite punctuation mark of mine; I highly recommend its use when wanting to connect two complete thoughts without a coordinating conjunction.
  • We all scream for ice cream… Yeah, we do! I love my pal G’s commentary on life in suburbia, even without 2.1 kids and a dog.
  • Bananas Represent Everything That is Wrong with Our Food System. If you didn’t read my book review of Barbara Kingsolver’s book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle then you probably won’t understand why I like this item. So read my review and come back to this one.
  • Christianity ‘could die out within a century.’ Sounds like Britain needs some serious Christ-followers to “sacrifice” life in the States to minister to the folks across the lake.

If you liked what you read today, be sure to check out my Google Reader Shared Items all week long! Have a great weekend!

Triathlon Training: Week 3

How do you spell slacker? S-A-R-A-H. I had two awesome workouts Monday and Tuesday, but I was sore and exhausted from said workouts on Wednesday, and my post-work cycling class was put on the back burner Thursday because I spend the last half hour at work holed up in the shower in the women’s restroom due to insane weather. And I was plain lazy Friday and Saturday. Here’s what I did this week:

Monday, June 16, 2008

  • Workout Type. Running
  • Route. Forest Park 3-mile loop
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 70 minutes
  • Distance. 6 miles
  • Pace per mile. 11:40
  • Additional Notes. This is the longest I’ve run without knee pain in a long time. Yea!

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

  • Workout Type. Cycling class
  • Route. YMCA
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 45 minutes
  • Distance. 9.6 miles
  • Pace per mile. 4:40
  • Additional notes. Lots of chafing. Not good.

Sunday, June 22, 2008

  • Workout type. Running
  • Route. Forest Park 3-mile loop
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 30 minutes
  • Distance. 3 miles
  • Pace per mile. 10:00
  • Additional notes. About five minutes into my run, an electrical storm started. And then it started raining at the one-mile mark. It rained for about a mile. It’s crazy, but I think the rain makes me faster because it cools me off. I also hate walking in the rain, so I’m compelled to keep running. Just wish I had my visor to keep some of the water off my face.

Triathlon Training: Week 2

Somehow, I managed to not run at all this week. Not so good. It’s hard for me to get up and work out before work two morning in a row, so if I swim in the mornings, the next day I can take a cycling class and strength train in the evenings. I have good intentions to run in the evenings on the days I swim, but I’ve been reading so much, that I don’t want to put my books down and get out of the house. We’ll see if I can remedy that next week.

Monday, June 9, 2008

  • Workout Type. Lap swim
  • Route. YMCA indoor pool
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 40 minutes
  • Distance. 1000 yards (20 laps)
  • Pace per mile. N/A
  • Additional notes. Good workout today. Started with an easy warm up of six breast/side stroke laps. Main workout included two sets of 1 free, 1 breast, and 1 side laps + two sets of 2 free, 1 breast, 1 side. Cooled down with a lap of back stroke. Met benchmark no. 4: 2 free laps nonstop. No creepy weird guys this morning.

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Third wedding anniversary. I wanted to get up early and go to cycling class, but getting up before work to work out two days in a row is proving difficult, if not impossible. Told myself I would run after I got home from dinner, but we put in a movie and sat on the couch. No workout today.

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

  • Workout Type. Lap swim
  • Route. YMCA indoor pool
  • Feeling. :|
  • Time. 40 minutes
  • Distance. 1000 yards (20 laps)
  • Pace per mile. N/A
  • Additional notes. I so did not want to get out of bed this morning, and my workout wasn’t great. What was "easy" on Monday was really difficult today. When I free stroke, I find myself focusing on too much at once: flutter kicking, arm rotation, head position, and of course, breathing. There’s so much I feel is wrong with my technique that I don’t know how to focus on just one thing. Strength trained at home in the evening.

Thursday, June 12, 2008

  • Workout Type. Cycling class
  • Route. YMCA
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 42 minutes
  • Distance. 9.2 miles
  • Pace per mile. 4:30ish
  • Additional notes . Strength trained before class and ran two laps after class. Had to focus quite a bit to push through the hard portions, but I love seeing how hard I can push myself!

Friday, June 13, 2008

  • Workout Type. Lap swimming
  • Route. YMCA indoor pool
  • Feeling. :)
  • Time. 35 minutes
  • Distance. 900 yards (18 laps)
  • Pace per mile. N/A
  • Additional notes. Checked benchmark #5 (1 breast/side lap + 2 free laps). I wanted so badly to swim longer, but there was lightning in the area, and apparently, you still have to get out of the pool even if it’s indoors. I had already postponed my swim one hour, and I didn’t want to wait around to finish off my workout. Call it an easy day.

Triathlon Training: Week 1

This was my first week of triathlon training! Even so, I had to take it a little easy this week because I had a 5K race on Saturday. Overall, I was pleased with what I accomplished. I must be more deliberate about stretching my knees after running and cycling, and I need to work on cool downs in the pool. I’ve also been told to practice transitioning from cycling to running, so for future cycling classes, I’m going to wrap up with a short run. Here are the week’s details:

Monday, June 2, 2008

  • workout type: lap swim
  • route: YMCA indoor pool
  • feeling: :|
  • time: 30′
  • distance: 550 yards
  • pace per mile: N/A
  • additional notes: First workout with goggles and swim cap. Was able to see underwater, so I could swim in a straight line. Workout pattern: breast stroke lap, free stroke lap, side stroke lap, free stroke lap. Took a 30 second break at the end of each pool length (25 yards). Hope to eventually limit 30 second breaks to the end of each lap (50 yards). Heart continued to race until the end of my shower. Need to work on my cool downs.

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

  • workout type: cycling class
  • route: YMCA cycling area
  • feeling: :|
  • time: 55′
  • distance: 10.1 miles
  • pace per mile: 5:27
  • additional notes: Hadn’t attended the Tuesday night cycling class yet. Instructor Scarlett is filling in for regular instructor for about a month; her class was crazy hard, but of the Y’s cycling instructor’s I like her best. Trying to better my cycling technique: keeping heels down, pulling up with my quads, toes pointed slightly in, etc. At some point, I need to take my bike for a spin and actually ride outside. (Which means I must get a helmet, two new tires, and the back hatch of the Blazer fixed. Ugh.)

Wednesday, June 4, 2008

  • workout type: easy run
  • route: Forest Park subdivision
  • feeling: :)
  • time: 35′ ish
  • distance: 3 miles
  • pace per mile: 11:30ish
  • additional notes: My times are pretty rough because my watch’s battery died. And I’m sort of holding out for a new Garmin. This was mostly a God-what-do-you-want-me-to-do-with-my-life run, so I wasn’t concentrating on time. Instead, I was thinking through career stuff. My legs were pretty tired from cycling the day before, so I took it pretty easy. Except for the last 200 yards or so; I’ll try to finish every run with a little kick.

Friday, June 6, 2008

  • workout type: lap swim
  • route: YMCA pool
  • feeling: :)
  • time: 30;
  • distance: 900 yards
  • pace per mile: N/A
  • additional notes: Pool was busy this afternoon. Had to share my lane first with a guy who was obviously a swimmer and was not crazy about sharing a lane with a novice. Why do manly-swimmer types always have huge tattoos on their thighs, anyway? After he left, I had to share a lane with an older gentleman who wore these horrible Speedos: black with a coral-colored floral print. And swimming with him was like swimming with a walrus; every time I swam past him I was afraid I was going to get smacked in the face. Checked benchmarks one through three off my list (no. three was swimming 2 laps nonstop: one breast/side + one free).

Saturday, June 7, 2008

  • workout type: 5K race
  • route: Running of the Squirrels, Marionville, MO
  • feeling: :)
  • time: 33′22
  • distance: 3.1 miles
  • pace per mile: 10:46
  • additional notes: I did not see one white squirrel; therefore, I think this race should be renamed the Running of the People. Knee tried to lock up in the third mile, so I had to walk on and off, which sucked because I really wanted to run the full race. I’ll have a full race recap with pictures in a day or two.

To the Gym, To the Gym, Jiggity Jig

Two things happened on Sunday: I wrote a marathon training update, and my friend Sam told me about a local triathlon. And then my mind started reeling: If I got back to the gym, maybe I could do this triathlon. I could swim laps in the mornings and take some cycling classes and be ready by August.

So what did I do? Well, Monday night I went to the gym for a cycling class and some strength training. Please understand, that this is the first time I’ve been to the Y in probably two months. I stopped going because I got tired of driving into Springfield, and I’m not much of a morning person, and it’s always busy after work, so I just phased it out of my routine.

And cycling class went well. I got in 13 miles, which is more than what I would ride in the sprint triathlon. And I felt good about that, but I was a bit concerned about the swimming portion. I haven’t swam laps since I was on swim team in eighth grade; I can swim, but I’m not a great swimmer. I vowed to give it a try anyway.

Tuesday morning, I broke out my bathing suit and ventured to the pool side of the Y. You have no idea how nervous I was. For one, I was afraid I’d get in the way of all the other swimmers, and two, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to swim in a straight line.

It wasn’t so bad. There were only two other swimmers, so I wasn’t in the way at all. And because the free stroke wears me out so much, I stuck to the breast stroke, which isn’t a speedy stroke, but it worked for me. I tried the free stroke for half a lap and ran into the wall. Yes, the side of the pool because I veered to the right too much. If I keep this up for the sprint triathlon, I’ll have to master the free stroke, which means I’ll have to get some goggles, so I can see where I’m going.

I ran 3 miles last night and did another cycling class this morning. Early morning classes are a little rough for me, but with some coffee when I get to work and a little nap after dinner, I think I’ll be able to make it. I haven’t committed to this sprint triathlon yet, but it’s a possibility. Yea!

Marathon Training Update: Uh, Wishful Thinking

I realize I haven’t written much about my marathon training lately, but there’s a reason for that: my marathon training has gone to the crapper. Seriously.

See, my thoughts were that I could double the length of my marathon training thus taking twice the time to build up my mileage. I thought my knees would be able to handle it, but I quickly learned that my left knee refuses to go farther than six miles—and that’s pushing it. Five miles is barely comfortable.

And I’m thankful for five miles! But something in the back of my mind tells me that I’m not a real runner unless I’m training for a big race. So I try to be upbeat, but I’m sad that the marathon this fall is iffy. In the meantime, I’m still running a few times a week, and I have three races on my schedule for this summer—2 5Ks and 1 10K. I’ve been able to do some speedier short runs, so maybe I can break my PR for the shorties next month.

I considered doing a sprint triathlon in July, but it’s in Texas, and I don’t think our budget can handle the registration, travel, and equipment costs right now. Besides that, I’m a horrible swimmer.

So that’s what’s going on with me, and that’s why I haven’t been writing about it. I’ll keep you posted on my upcoming races. Pray for a PR!

For-the-Love-of-Links Friday | 21 March 2008

Well, I’ve done it again and let two weeks pass between link-lovin’s. This week you’ll find some great political pieces, writing tips, and as always, random fun. Enjoy!

  • Worst Easter Candies for Your Waist Let’s start off this week with something to depress you. Just how much Easter candy did you eat this week?
  • Family Friends Race Gender Another great post from David Catanese at KY3. I think we can all relate to skating on thin political ice around friends and family.
  • And You Think You’re Tired of the Democratic Campaign! Just imagine how the Democratic staffers feel! We were supposed to have chosen the Democratic nominee by now, but there’s no end in sight. Can you imagine not taking a day off for months at a time?
  • California Parents Don’t Have the Right to Homeschool Their Children Did you here about this recent ruling from the CA court system? Unless parents are qualified, they’re no longer allowed to homeschool. I have both family and friends that homeschool their kidlings (and they do a fantastic job), so I’ll be keeping tabs on this news story in the future.
  • Would You Confess Your Sins Online I’m not Catholic, but I find this topic fascinating, and much of my research for my thesis involved notions of online religion.
  • Top 80 Church Websites ChurchRelevance.com released its list of top 80 church websites this year, and I couldn’t disagree with them more! The sites at the top of their list are Flash-based and not user friendly, but I suppose that a “cool” website trumps usability any day! Who cares if your church website is artsy if your visitors can’t find anything they’re looking for. Hmphf!
  • Why Bloggers Should Moderate All Comments My gal pal Teresa is an avid blogger, and she recommends that bloggers moderate all the comments on their blogs. Good arguments to consider for all bloggers.
  • Verbicide One of my new favorite blogs is the Mighty Red Pen because the blogger is also an editor. Have you seen “verbing” of words around your home? In recent years, Googling, blogging, and texting have all been “verbed.”
  • Nix Those Adjectives and Adverbs This applies to anyone who wants to be a better writer—use plain English and keep your sentences simple. Thanks to the writers over at “So You Want to be Published”!
  • Just Say No to These Three Enemies of Clear and Direct Writing Even though I have two degrees in writing, I’m always thankful for reminders in writing well, and this post from Copyblogger teaches us to say no to metadiscourse, redundancy, and pretentious words.
  • Four-Word Thinking And blogging of clear and direct writing, now is as good a time as any to introduce my new blog: Four-Word Thinking. What can you say with four words?
  • Running Long is a Gift This article from the Runner’s Lounge reminded me that I should be thankful for every mile I run. Running long is indeed a gift, especially when you must limit the miles you go every week.
  • Guinness Petitions to Make St. Patrick’s Day a National Holiday I’m just a teeny bit Irish, but that’s reason enough for me to support the movement to make St. Paddy’s Day a national holiday. Agree with the peeps at Guinness? Sign the petition here.
  • Daylight Savings Time ≠ Energy Savings Time I’m not the only one still recovering from DST; apparently, the promise that moving the DST schedule earlier in the spring and later in the fall isn’t saving the energy as Congress promised, which just goes to show that we shouldn’t let our lawmakers make scientific decisions.
March 13th, 2008

Good Sleep Comes to Those Who Wait

Last night I slept like an angel, like a baby, like a log, like a woman who’s suffered the effects of Daylight Savings Time for four days. I had already scheduled a vacation day, so I skipped Bible study (oops…didn’t do my homework all week) and slept in.

And now I’m home in Clinton, spending a few days with my family—you know, getting in visits with grandparents, mooching off my parents, and generally being lazy. Heck, I’m even screening my phone calls and enjoying Mom’s semi-high-speed Internet.

Mom and I went to the community center this afternoon to run/walk. I “ran” 3 miles and felt really good. I have a 7-miler plotted out for Saturday; hopefully all will go well.

More later. I must get back to slacking off.
