Top 10 Things I Love About Summer

It’s raining in the Ozarks today. Feels like spring, which I guess for the next 20 or so days, it still is. I’m usually not a fan of summer. I hate being hot. I hate being sticky (and it’s always sticky in the Ozarks). And like most women, I’m thrilled with body in a bathing suit.

But I’m trying to turn over a new leaf this summer, and I’m embracing the warmth. Here are the top ten things I love about summer:

  1. Homemade ice cream
  2. Independence Day
  3. My birthday (August 20)
  4. Flip flops
  5. Tank tops
  6. Driving around town with my windows down and radio up
  7. How green the grass is right after it rains
  8. (Slightly) slower days at work
  9. Sonic slushes
  10. The smell of freshly-laid asphalt

OK, back to you. What do you love about summer?

Frazzle Rock: My New TV Show

If I could create a TV show based on my day, I would call it “Frazzle Rock.” I have been frazzled all day long, and it would be a good day to live underground and eat radishes. My day has been insane since my first step into the office today, and on top of that, I had a cup of coffee this morning, so I’m jittery on top of everything else.

First, a quick update on my meeting with the youth guy last night: CB was totally onboard with Twitter, and he started getting the youth to sign up last night. Introduced him to HootSuite and TweetDeck and got the youth account set up. I’m excited to see how he’ll be using it to stay in touch with the students and their parents. On to my Thursday…

My first joy of the morning was a note from my boss to return some books that we had purchased for the resource wall. We’re in the middle of a sermon series about the family, so the wall is covered with books about marriage, sex, parenting, kids, teens, etc. To his dismay last night, the boss noticed that the book titled “How to Talk to Your Kids About Sexuality” was endorsed by Ted Haggard. Eek! Granted, the book was published long before the incident, but as a church, we simply can’t recommend books with that kind of endorsement.

And women’s Bible study was this morning, which was fine and I love having the moms and their kids in the building, but when you’re already frazzled, more activity is not what you need. Once the building cleared out, I was able to tackle my set of Thursday tasks. Then I got a series of phone calls from miscellaneous people asking a variety of different things of me, and I hadn’t had lunch, so I was not only jittery but getting grouchy.

Ate lunch, took 30 minutes to just sit and breathe, and then I had a meeting with Linden to discuss our Twitter project. I really didn’t think we had too much to discuss, but I have quite a few notes. We discussed the audience and scope of our project and nailed down some goals for it. Not sure when or where we’ll release it to the public, but we think it will be a good resource for those who are brand new to Twitter and haven’t figured it out, whether for personal or business use. It was awesome to talk to Linden (gotta love Google voice chat), but we both agreed it will be tons better when we’re both on the same continent.

After wrapping up some loose ends in the office, I took some notes and brainstormed for a creative communications meeting tonight. Web development falls under creative comm along with photography, design, video, and production at LifePoint, and the leaders of all those areas are meeting tonight for coffee. I have seven minutes to hit the highlights of web development, and my three main points are

  1. Twitter implementation
  2. Sermon archiving
  3. Redemption story writing

I’ll also be commenting on specific challenges I’m facing right now, which are training my volunteers to take some of my web development load and creating fresh content for the web site. And then we’re brainstorming for the next sermon series on Ruth; I have some ideas, but they’re in no way related to web development.

Now wouldn’t you all watch a TV show of me in my cave-office going about my day? Granted, I’d be a bit muppet-ish, but that’s part of the fun!

Reindeer Make Good Pillows

Chris and Biff the Reindeer

Chris and Biff the Reindeer

Chris is going to kill me, but I don’t care. He’s asleep on the couch using his 17-year-old reindeer Biff as a pillow. That’s right, Chris has had Biff since he was 10-years-old. Biff usually lives in the guest bedroom, but we brought him out for Christmas. Just this afternoon, I commented that I was surprised the cats hadn’t snuggled up with Biff this month.

Speaking of the cats, we had the bright idea of petting them with dryer sheets this afternoon to clean off some of their fur and general linty-ness. Now they both smell like fresh laundry. It’s sorta weird, and I think they’re confused about their fresh smells, too.

And I have a two-day work week! W00t! I am so ready for twelve days off of work even if it means two very busy days Monday and Tuesday.

Yea! We made it through the week! Most importantly, I made it through the week. Here’s my last video explaining what I do at LifePoint Church:

Since my two work days are going to be so crazy next week, you all might get some bonus posts!

She Works Hard for the Money, Part I

This week, I have a series of vlog posts about my job at LifePoint Church, and I answer the question: What does Sarah do all day? Every post this week will answer that question for that day. Here’s Monday:

Snow Days

An ice storm is moving through the Ozarks tonight, and I’m tempted to stay up and watch it come in. Chris noted that watching an ice storm roll in is not nearly as fun as watching tornadoes roll in. I agree. At least with tornadoes, the weathermen have something to tell us on a minute-by-minute basis.

Anyway, if the roads are really bad tomorrow, I might not have to go in to work, which will throw a wrench in tomorrow’s planned post. (It’s gonna be a fun one!) In a fleeting moment of wisdom tonight, I picked up a stack of paperwork I’ll need to go through tomorrow and brought it home just in case I get to work on the couch while watching Ellen. <fingers crossed />

Freezing rain and sleet are on their way. An Arctic front has moved in. I have mixed feelings about going to work tomorrow:

  • It’s gonna be slick, which means people are going to be stupid on the roads. I’m confident that I will get around pretty well, but I’d rather not get out if I don’t have to. And then there’s the adventure of trying to get my rear-wheel-drive Blazer up a slick, icy driveway after I go out. (I have sandbags in the back, but I don’t want to test them out. And I’d like to keep what’s left of my mailbox, which I pretty much destroyed last winter with the Blazer, intact.)
  • It’s gonna be cold. For days. And I’m afraid if I let myself stay in on Monday, I’ll want to stay in on Tuesday and Wednesday, too. Of course, the building at work will be cold, too, and there are no cats there to keep me warm. Or blankets. But there is leftover pizza from tonight’s Explore LifePoint…
  • Vacation is so close. In 10 days, I’ll be on vacation. I’m not going anywhere, but I have 12 days off for Christmas and New Year’s. I have quite a bit to finish between now and then, and while I can more or less work on those from home, I don’t want to get in the vacation mindset until it’s official.
  • What about Chris? Chris’s workplace has no policy on snow/ice days, so more than likely, he’ll have to make the trek into Springfield tomorrow. And snow days are no fun when you have no one to hang out with. :(

Thankfully, we have plenty of food and wood in case we get iced in, so I’m not concerned about that. And ultimately, the choice isn’t up to me. I’ll get up as usual tomorrow, and if the boss calls and tells me not to come in, I’m prepared to work at home–in my jammies.
