Social Media Guru I’m Not

After reading this humbling post from ReadWriteEnterprise this weekend, I am repenting for ever thinking of myself as a social media expert. (No, I never said it out loud, but it still counts if you think it.)

Where did I ever get the notion that I’m a smartypants? I can definitely trace it back to grad school and my thesis, which had the phrase Web 2.0 in the title. That’s when I started researching the church and how Web 2.0 was affecting how the church does church. But that was two years ago, and and it is terrifying how out-of-date my thesis is. But I’m still doing work in this field: web development for my church; managing our Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube accounts; working with our volunteers who like playing with these things, too. See, I have experience. I’m not a social media idiot.

So last week, I started a new experiment in Twitter. OK, not really an experiment, but I resolved to engage more people in conversations and to share the stuff I think is interesting. (For a long time, I’ve done very little sharing about the things I love–like social media, blogging, running, crocheting, etc.–because, well, I thought it was a good idea at the time.) And all the experts (who are indeed experts and not gigantic idiots like myself) say that I should do these things so people will like me to build the value of my Twitter profile. And I’ve also been building some value by playing with Twitter’s new lists function. And I’ve been looking for new local people and new social media experts to follow. It’s been fun.

And what is the purpose of this post? I’m not sure. I just wanted to let you know that I’m not a social media expert. I have so much to learn, but what I am learning, I’ll be sharing here and on Twitter. And what am I? We’ll wrap up everything I love about social media (blogging, tweeting, Facebook, YouTube, etc.), tie a bow on it, and call me a social media enthusiast.

Time to vote on this social media’s narcissist’s repentance. Brilliantly creative or gigantic idiot?

I Feel Like Pond Scum Today…

…but I don’t really want to talk about it. So instead I went to YouTube to find kitten videos to cheer me up. This one of a kitten vs. an electric toothbrush did the trick. Hope you like it.

The Skittles Social Media Dream: Taste the Rainbow

2061152451_8b055e389a_mThe blogosphere and the twittersphere were abuzz about Skittles.com yesterday. Before you read the rest of the post, check it out (you’ll have to provide your birthday and agree to the terms and conditions) and report back to me. Interesting, huh? Essentially, Skittles is utilizing the power of social media–using what Skittle eaters were already saying–to generate Skittles.com content on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr.

Everyone has had an opinion, and I know the hype will die down quickly, as all things do on the Internet, but I gotta say, I think Skittles got it right. Skittles figured out that people will come to their site to look up nutritional information or to contact the company, but those same people won’t stick around for much else. But they might already be talking on Twitter about the Skittles snack they’re eating. Or they might join other Skittle eaters in a group on Facebook. Or they might take a cool photo of Skittles to share on Flickr. Or they might make a Skittles-themed video for YouTube. I don’t eat a lot of Skittles, but I might be inclined to check out Skittles on these sites.

As a web developer who is quickly becoming a social media nut, I’m totally envious of all that content, all those users. Talk about a dream! I struggle with LifePoint Online (our entire online presence) and the lack of participation on our web site and on our Facebook page. We’re getting to know Twitter. We’re on YouTube, but not much is happening there because we haven’t really pushed it. And we’re not on Flickr (yet?). I’m not sure who’s fault it is, this lack of participation. On one hand, I’m probably a little too gung-ho on this whole social media craze, but am I wrong to see its possibilities at LifePoint? On the other hand, many of our people are just now getting on the social media train, and it’s not their fault we’re remedial social networkers. We’re in the Midwest, the Ozarks. Things move a little slow here.

So I guess I’m just dreaming today. Tasting the social media rainbow, so to speak. Imagining what might someday be for LifePoint Online.

I’d buy everyone a kitten in a box:

Warning: You’ve Got A Hot Bod

This video just came across my gReader and is a happy little reminder to focus on my body’s assets rather than its rejects. What’s my favorite feature? My adorable, totally awesome toes! Watch this…

Sarah’s Favorite Video 2007

My favorite video of 2007 was the first video I posted on my blog, and I’d nearly forgotten it until I was reviewing my videos a few weeks ago. “On Courage” isn’t just about running or daydreaming; it’s about finding the courage to pursue what (or who) moves you. Watching this video compels me to live and leave nothing behind. I hope it inspires you, too!

  2. Make out with your significant other.
  3. Post a fake resume on Monster.com.
  4. Play Tetris until your thumbs are numb.
  5. Put together a 1,500 piece Christmas puzzle.
  6. Watch all five Harry Potter movies in one weekend.
  7. Reread all seven Harry Potter books in one week.
  8. Update your Facebook status every hour.
  9. Torment your cat by practicing your hog-tying skills.

Fastest Tetris Player Ever

One more mindless video as a reward for all my hard work this week. GeekSugar shared this today, and I could not stop watching. I can only get to maybe level 7 in Tetris, so I about peed my pants watching this. And watch this baby to the end: he seems fast at the beginning of the video but that’s nothing compared to the action at the end!

Crack Spiders

Thanks to Justin and Barron who showed me this video last weekend. Even if you don’t like spiders, stick with it to the end.

P.S. This video has some foul language and drug references, so tuck the kids to bed before watching.

"Christians" Preaching a God of Hate? Hmm…

I need to keep this post short tonight because I have a crapload to do before I go to bed, but some like-minded friends of ours told us about this video on YouTube. Dubbed “The Most Hated Family in America,” they picket soldier’s funerals and condemn pretty much everyone; furthermore, they preach that God hates both America and you.

I watched the first two (there are seven or eight), and I’m sharing the first with you. I am actually sad to share this because I don’t want to acknowledge that people who call themselves Christians actually behave like this. I could give you an outline of verses (in context) that argue where they are wrong, but I hope any real Christ-follower can see through their lies without a dissertation from me.

Let’s just leave it at this: As real Christ-followers, we must be extra deliberate to LOVE people and then speak truth into their lives when the time is right.

P.S. At a family reunion this summer, I learned that one of my dad’s cousins and her husband are a part of veterans biker group. Whenever there’s a soldier’s funeral in the Kansas City area, they get on their hogs and “guard” the funeral. I’m guessing that they’re guarding some of the same funerals these people are picketing.
